Susan Denny is a Tasmanian born artist. Since graduating as a Fine Art painting major from the Tasmanian School of Art in the early 70’s, she has spent most of the time interstate.
In recent years, the lure of her childhood connections to Lilydale, in Tasmania’s north east, has brought her back. She & her husband now live in a 100+ year old free settlers’ cottage which has been adapted for an art gallery and studio, on the spectacular ridges of Mt Arthur.
The studio’s outlook to Mt. Arthur, is a prime focal point for the artist.
The mountain’s infinite moods vary as each passing cloud casts its unique shadow on the northern face, such that every momentary glance is never the same.
Susan works mainly in oil, on canvas or, canvas paper. Landscapes are her passion, though portraits have featured throughout; from commissions, to assigned political caricatures for The Sydney Morning Herald.
At the heart of her work, is an emphasis to marry the key elements of light and colour with the paint medium, so that the subject ‘looks’ like paint, rather than the other way around. So too, is the question of what to leave out.
The quest to reach a simplicity that seems to have been achieved effortlessly, while still suggesting its all there, is work in progress!
